\n\tOxford Dictionaries has named \u201cclimate emergency\u201d as its 2019 Word of the Year, choosing it from an all-environmental shortlist that also included \u201cclimate action,\u201d \u201cclimate denial,\u201d \u201ceco-anxiety,\u201d \u201cextinction\u201d and \u201cflight shame.\u201d<\/span>

\n\tNormally, the shortlist includes a variety of different words that illustrate new trends in language usage. While the choices are often politically inflected, Katherine Connor Martin, an editor at Oxford Dictionaries, said the unusual decision to focus on climate-related terms reflected a \u201cdemonstrable escalation\u201d in the language around climate.<\/span>

\n\tThe use of the term \u201cclimate emergency\u201d increased by a hundredfold since 2018, according to data collected in the Oxford Corpus, a database containing hundreds of millions of words of written English. In fact, it was the most common compound involving \u201cemergency,\u201d occurring three times as often as the next most-common, \u201chealth emergency.\u201d<\/span>

\n\tIn part, Ms. Martin noted, this reflects a deliberate decision by some news organizations, including The Guardian, to use \u201cclimate emergency\u201d or \u201cclimate crisis\u201d instead of \u201cclimate change,\u201d to better convey the urgency of the situation.<\/span>
