The Oriental Pearl Radio and Television Tower stands on the bank of the Huangpu River and at the point of Lujiazui in Pudong. Surrounded by waters on three sides and facing a row of buildings of variegated Western architectures along the Bund across the river, the 468-meter-tall tower ranks first in Asia and third in the world in height. The designer, inspired by a line in a popular poem of Bai Juyi, a prominent poet in China’s Tang Dynasty, ingeniously had 11 spheres arrayed in order of their sizes like a string of pearls from high up in the blue sky down to a carpet of green lawn, with two colossal dazzling ruby-like spheres propped high up toward the sky. The harmonious entity of the tower presents an imaginary picture of \u201cpearls, large and small, dropping onto a plate of jade\u201d \u2014 a poetic and artistic image that originated with the poet.<\/p>\n

The Tower consists of three gigantic columns, each of which is nine meters in diameter, a spherical penthouse, an upper sphere and a lower sphere, five smaller spheres, and a tower base. The Tower is equipped with a double-decked elevator, which can take 50 people at a time, and two high-speed elevators, which run at a speed of seven meters per second. In the main hall, there is a museum named the Shanghai Urban History Development Exhibition Hall, which, with a floor space of more than 6,000 square meters, puts on display exhibits showing the history of Shanghai’s development over the past century.<\/p>\n
