\n\tA mountain needn’t be high;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIt is famous so long as there is a deity on it.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tA lake needn’t be deep;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIt has supernature power so long as there is a dragon in it.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tMy home is humble,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut it enjoys the fame of virtue so long as I am living in it.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe moss creeping onto the doorsteps turns them green.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe color of the grass reflected through the bamboo curtains turns the room blue.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tErudite scholars come in good spirits to talk with me,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd among my guests there is no unlearned common man.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIn this humble home, I can enjoy playing my plainly decorated qin,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tor read the Buddhist Scriptures quietly,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWithout the disturbance of the noisy tunes that jar on the ears,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tor the solemn burden of reading official documents.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tMy humble home is like the thatched hut of Zhuge Liang of Nanyang,<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tor the Pavilion Ziyun of Xishu.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tConfucious once said:”How could we call a room humble as long as here is a virtuous man in it?”<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAbout the Author<\/strong>:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tLiu Yuxi (772-842) was a native of Luoyang, Henan Province and became Jinshi after passing the highest imperial civil service examination at the age of twenty-one. He was much concerned with the politics of his time and was exiled for his reform activity. He was well celebrated for his prose and poetry.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
